Alkaline: having properties of an alkali, or containing alkali; having a pH greater than 7
pH refers to a measurement of acidity or alkalinity. Measurement below 7 are considered to be acidic (the lower the measurement, the more acidic), and measurements above 7 are considered to be more alkaline (the higher the measurement, the more alkaline)
The body functions best at levels measuring slightly alkaline(78 is ideal). Alkalinity within the body keeps our tissues supple and functional and reduces inflammation. Without proper function of our body tissues, our organs cannot function properly and we start to malfunction and disease sets in. Disease cannot exist in an Alkaline environment.
Ever have a pool? You know how you have to check the alkalinity of the water and add chemicals to neutralize the acidity of the water to make it safe to swim? Our body is no different. Except in our case we need to reduce the amount of chemicals.
Alkalinity measurements are heavily influenced by the foods we eat. Alkaline foods are mainly fruits and vegetables. Garlic, cucumbers, lemon, asparagus,spinach, avocado, cabbage and broccoli are a few examples of alkalizing foods. There is a very long list of foods that help raise your alkaline levels.
Sounds easy, right? Eat a cucumber and never get cancer!
Here’s the catch……..
There are foods that pull our pH out of Alkalinity. And of course, it is much
easier to fall out than it is to get back in.
Can you guess what the Acid producing list includes? You guessed it!
Processed foods, dairy, meat, sugars and corn! All of our favorites! All of our goto comfort foods! All of our backyard bbq and drive thru foods!
So, if Alkaline foods can save us from disease…do we have to give up all the foods we love to live a long and happy life?
I am going to let you in on a little secret. The key to happiness……..is balance.
We all know we are going to eat a big greasy cheeseburger with fries and a soda at some point in our life! And we are going to enjoy it!
The best thing you can do for yourself, and your future self is focus on increasing the amount of alkalizing foods you eat every day. Add spinach or sweet potatoes to your lunch and pineapple to your breakfast! Add lemon or lime or cucumber to your water! Concentrate on adding good stuff in and eventually there won’t be as much room for all the bad stuff!
